The deadliest man alive... takes on a whole army with two guns and a fistful of dynamite. In this freewheeling, anarchic adventure set in 19th century Mexico, an American mercenary rescues a nun from her would-be molesters. He then learns that the chance meeting is a stroke of luck for him because she knows a good deal about the officers in the garrison he plans to invade. He eventually discovers that she is not a nun. A romance develops as both fortress walls and myths explode in this powerful adventure drama.
Clint Eastwood's second film as a director (following the highly successful Play Misty For Me), High Plains Drifter returns the actor to his familiar scene of the Old West and his familiar role of "The Man With No Name". Eastwood portrays a mysterious stranger who emerges out of the heat waves of the desert and rides into the guilt-ridden town of Lago. After three murders and one rape is committed, The Stranger is hired by the town to protect it from three gunmen just out of jail. The Stranger then paints the entire town bright red, renames it "Hell", and supplies Divine retribution in fiery climax.
Joe Kidd sees Clint Eastwood at the top of his form as a western hero in the story of a land war in New Mexico at the turn of the century. Filmed in 1971, Kidd brings together veteran western director John Sturges, the classic backdrop of the High Sierras, the top-notch acting skills of Robert Duvall and the rugged Eastwood as a "hired gun" who takes action based on his own particular sense of justice. And like every classic western, it has gunfights, conflicts and a slam-bang finale which has a locomotive being driven through a saloon where the bad guys are hiding. |
